As a piano pedagogue, he composed methods for the piano, harmonium, organ etc.
His best known pedagogical work is 'The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises'. This set of piano exercises was originally published in 1874. Since then, it was in use at conservatories and music schools all over the world, and became progressively the most widely used method in modern piano teaching.
