The Man Behind The Virtuoso Pianist: Charles-Louis Hanon's Life and Works

Though Charles Louis Hanon has been known around the world for more than a century—most notably from his last name emblazoned on the front of the Schirmer edition of his exercises—his life and other works have largely been ignored in the scholarly literature.

 

As we approach the bicentenary of his birth, the time has come not only to examine Hanon’s place in piano pedagogy, but also to explore the life of this quiet, devout man.
